The City of London is pleased to announce a free pickup service for residents to assist with their fall cleaning efforts. Under the leadership of Mayor Randall Weddle, this initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the community and keeping our city beautiful. The free pickup period will run from Monday, October 20th, through Friday, October 31st, 2025. Please review the following guidelines for participation: Who is eligible? This service is available to all residents within the city limits of London. What is included? During this two-week period, residents are entitled to one (1) free curbside pickup. What can be picked up? The free service allows for either one standard pickup truck load of brush or one standard pickup truck load of junk. Please note, residents may choose one or the other, but not both, for the free collection. Are there charges? Any loads significantly larger than a standard pickup bed or any additional loads beyond the first one will be subject to a fee. To participate, please have your items placed at the curb during this period. Our Public Works department, under the direction of Phillip Rawlings, will be managing the collections throughout the city. For any questions about this service, please contact London Public Works department at 606.864.5521.
To keep the citizens of London informed, Mayor Randall Weddle sent a letter to the City Council this morning regarding essential city business. The letter addresses the need to pass the 2025 Property Tax Rate ordinance, a critical step required for the City to mail property tax bills and fund city services. Following a lack of quorum at yesterday’s meeting, the mayor has requested a special called meeting to ensure the city’s obligations to its residents are met without delay. We are sharing his letter to maintain transparency and keep you informed.
The London Fire Department responded today to a chemical release and explosion at a commercial business. Upon arrival, fire units quickly established control of the scene and initiated decontamination (Decon) operations to ensure the safety of both employees and first responders. As part of the response, the London Fire Department also assisted with hospital decontamination procedures, ensuring proper treatment and protection for anyone potentially exposed. The chemical involved in the incident has been identified as Hyperflex (Acid Sanitizer), which contains phosphoric acid and nitric acid. While this product is corrosive and can cause significant health effects with direct contact, we are relieved to report that no life-threatening injuries have been reported at this time. London Fire Department personnel worked closely with partnering agencies to contain the hazard, protect the public, and provide medical support. Mayor Handley was kept apprised throughout the situation.
Join Us to Support Community Recovery Efforts We are proud to share an opportunity for our community to come together and support families in London and Laurel County, as well as across Eastern Kentucky, who were impacted by the devastating tornadoes this past May. Kentucky’s very own Anne Wilson will be performing a special benefit concert on August 11th at the Corbin Arena. This evening is all about bringing hope and healing to those who need it most. Every dollar from the show will go directly to recovery efforts, supporting The Sheppard Family Foundation’s crucial work right here with families in London and Laurel County, and contributing to the region-wide Appalachian Tornado Relief Fund through the Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky. Tickets are available now at AnneWilsonOfficial.com
In June of 2024, at the direction of Mayor Weddle, the Public Works Department conducted inspections of city bridges, which led to a state inspection of a structure deemed in urgent need of repair. The state inspection confirmed the city’s findings. Following this, emergency road aid was applied for, which was successfully secured in September of 2024. The project, which involved complex design considerations to maintain existing stream and road dimensions, was completed efficiently. The structure replacement was executed in eight work days, considerably ahead of the projected schedule. Enhancements to improve pedestrian access and the area’s aesthetic are also being added. The bridge is anticipated to open to traffic in the coming days, with final paving to commence as soon as asphalt plants begin operation. Thank you, Public Works team, Mayor Weddle, and state partners in the timely completion of this project!
A Special City Council Meeting has been scheduled for next week. Details may be found in the agenda linked below. Agenda Date: March 10, 2025 Time: 5:30 p.m. Location: London Community Center
