*All pictures are from a demonstration and not a real accident scene*
Today, our community came together for a crucial demonstration aimed at raising awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence. With prom season approaching, students need to understand the risks associated with impaired driving.
South Laurel High School hosted a poignant mock DUI motor vehicle crash. Student actors bravely portrayed the chilling aftermath, depicting the devastating consequences of one reckless decision.
The response from our community was swift and unified. The Police Department, Fire Department, Sheriff Department, Rescue Squad, and Ambulance Service all joined forces to showcase the real-life response to such tragedies.
Following the demonstration, a KSP Trooper addressed the students, emphasizing the importance of making responsible choices behind the wheel. Then representatives of the court system, including Judge John Chappell and County Attorney J.L. Albright held a mock trial emphasizing the reality of remorse and consequences. Using support and guidance, we stand united in our commitment to promoting safety and well-being in our community.
Mayor Weddle asks that as prom approaches, let's remember the lessons learned today. Let's pledge to make smart decisions and ensure that everyone arrives home safely. Together, we can prevent senseless tragedies and protect our future.

Saturday, we celebrate the extraordinary resilience and spirit of a young girl who embodies courage and joy in the face of challenges. Meet Maizley Coffey, a six-year-old, whose vibrant spirit shines bright despite her journey with Down Syndrome.
Born with Trisomy 21, Maizley spent 68 days in the NICU at UK Hospital. Against all odds, she triumphed over every obstacle, emerging as a beacon of hope and inspiration.
In 2023, Maizley underwent heart surgery, a testament to her unwavering strength and the remarkable care she received. Today, she thrives, embodying the resilience of the human spirit.
Thanks to the Walmart Heart Program, Maizley's joy knows no bounds. Mayor Weddle officially proclaimed April 13th, 2024 as "Maizley Coffey Day," a testament to her impact on our community.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the London - Laurel Rescue Squad, London Police Department, KY, Laurel County Sheriff's Office, Tumble Station, and the Walmart Heart Program for their unwavering support in making Maizley's journey memorable.
The community came together to celebrate Maizley as she became an honorary Walmart Driver, riding in a semi-truck parade from the Walmart Transportation Office to the Walmart Supercenter in London. Let's come together to honor her resilience and spread a message of love and hope.

REDBUD RIDE OPENS CYLCING
SEASON ON SATURDAY APRIL 20
Cycling season 2024 will kick off in earnest this Saturday, April 20 with a popular ride, fittingly, in the Cycling Capital of Kentucky.
The annual Redbud Ride is set for Saturday beginning in downtown London and traversing through Laurel, Jackson and Rockcastle Counties. About 800-900 cyclists are expected to participate in a ride that enjoys widespread popularity in the cycling community for how well it is organized, its beautiful scenery along four well-marked routes, helpful volunteers, knowledgeable SAG drivers and its well-stocked rest stops.
The Redbud Ride is organized by London Downtown and presented by London Tourism and Parks. To ensure smooth operations, the City of London Police Department will provide traffic control, while numerous dedicated organizations generously volunteer to staff rest stops and provide support to the riders throughout the day.
“This ride brings out the best of our community spirit because it takes over 100 volunteers to plan, organize, and create the ideal 'Redbud Ride Experience' for our guests,” said London Downtown Executive Director Julie Rea. “Year after year we are proud of the teamwork, dedication and perseverance of the volunteers to make this event one of the best cycling events in the state. It’s all about highlighting what a beautiful place we have here in London-Laurel County.”
“London Tourism and Parks appreciates the dedicated volunteers and organizations whose tremendous efforts make the Redbud Ride possible, and is proud to serve as the presenting sponsor. The ride works as a shining example of how community partnerships can come together to create great things for both our residents and visitors," said executive director Chris Robinson.
Many riders have returned to the Redbud Ride year after year since its inception 16 years ago—some from states as far away as California and Michigan. A group of Wounded Warriors from Ft. Campbell, Ky. is making its third straight trip.
“We provide them with a hotel room, a special jersey and other amenities as our way of thanking them for their service and sacrifice,” Rea said. “We want to thank First National Bank of Manchester for sponsoring this outreach.”
Unlike previous years, there are no activities scheduled the Friday night before the Redbud Ride, such as the block party and makers‘ market.
”The last couple of years the block parties have been touch and go because of the weather. We didn’t know what to plan for,” Rea said. “So this year we encouraging riders who come in Friday night to enjoy the fine food and entertainment offered by our restaurants downtown.”
Riders who have pre-registered can pick up their packets at the London Community Center from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, April 19. Walk-up registrations also will be taken during that time period, then again starting at 6 a.m. the day of the ride.
